Start with monitoring
Regular field scouting tells you what pests are actually present and at what numbers, rather than spraying on a fixed calendar. Sticky traps, pheromone traps, and simple visual counts can establish a threshold: the point at which a pest population is actually likely to cause economic damage.
Prevention comes before treatment
- Crop rotation interrupts the life cycle of pests that overwinter in the soil.
- Resistant varieties reduce pressure before it starts.
- Beneficial insects like ladybugs and parasitic wasps can keep aphid and caterpillar populations in check on their own.
Intervene selectively
When a pest does cross the damage threshold, start with the least disruptive option: physical barriers, targeted biological controls, or spot-treating affected areas rather than the whole field. Broad-spectrum chemical pesticides are kept as a last resort, both to protect beneficial insects and to slow the development of pesticide resistance.
The payoff
IPM takes more observation and record-keeping than a fixed spray schedule, but it typically costs less over a season and leaves more of the natural pest control already working in your fields intact.
